Discovering a new cause is easy. Knowing whether it deserves your support takes a bit more. These five questions cover most of what matters.
1. What specifically is this donation funding?
"Helping the community" is not an answer. A specific project, deliverable, or outcome is.
2. Who is actually doing the work on the ground?
Look for named partner organizations or local teams, not just the platform or fundraiser itself.
3. How will you know it worked?
Ask what update or report you'll receive, and when. If there's no answer, that's the answer.
4. Is the goal amount and progress visible?
A visible goal, amount raised, and donor count is a basic transparency signal that costs a platform nothing to show — and most trustworthy ones do.
5. Would you still support this if no one else could see that you did?
A useful gut check for separating causes you actually believe in from ones you're supporting for visibility.
